About the Piece

The sonorous word apalaanshi or apalaanchi —depending on who writes it— means “people of the beach.” The word has always been used by the Wayuu to designate those of their ethnicity who inhabit the eastern coastal area of the La Guajira peninsula. This is the second book by Santiago Harker about this fascinating human group that he knows like few others and has documented many times. Seduced by their rich culture, by their creative and poetic cosmogony, Harker embarked on a new journey along the beaches of the middle and upper Guajira, a very little explored area of the country, to deliver this personal and passionate vision, this memory of his dreams and encounters, this current testimony of a way of life that transforms to survive.
