About the Piece

Innovative and unclassifiable are the terms that could define the work of the Greek artist Sophia Vari within the world of modern classical sculpture, where she now holds a prominent place. An artist of fertile imagination, devoted to permanent study and research, her work has continuously transformed over the years. Initially a painter, she ventured into three-dimensional work first with bronze and then with marble. In recent years, she has also become involved in jewelry design using precious and semi-precious materials. From the sensual and voluptuous character of her early sculptures, she moves to the creation of abstract forms that denote a deep understanding of the human gesture, and to the discovery of the powerful effects of her classical forms on a monumental scale. This book traces the successive stages of her evolution, showing the fortunate trajectory of a work that merges, within an elegant eclecticism, influences from new and old masters and traces of ancient and remote cultures.
