The Legacy of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped

Weaving's Concierge

In 1961, the vision of wrapping the iconic L'Arc de Triomphe in Paris first took shape in the minds of artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. This dream lingered for six long decades before materializing into a breathtaking reality in 2021. For a remarkable 16 days, the monument was enveloped in 25,000 square meters of recyclable silvery blue polypropylene fabric, adorned with 3,000 meters of vibrant red rope.

The installation attracted six million viewers, each drawn to experience an extraordinary transformation of a beloved landmark. This unique project not only showcased the artists' commitment to creative freedom but also sparked conversations about art’s place in public spaces.

Documented in a stunning Collector’s Edition book, the project’s journey from inception to execution unfolds over 480 pages. It meticulously details the technical development and material production, alongside the shared experiences of millions who witnessed this ephemeral artwork.

Christo once said, “Each of our projects is like a slice of our life.” This profound connection to their art resonates throughout the pages, making the book a treasured homage to the artists’ legacy.

As we reflect on L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped, we celebrate the impact of public art and its ability to transform our perceptions of familiar spaces. It reminds us that creativity knows no bounds, leaving an indelible mark on our memories and inspiring future generations of artists.
